  2. leader 1954-89, prime minister 1962-71,
  3. president 1971-89. His period in office was
  4. one of caution and conservatism. Zhivkov, a
  5. printing worker, joined the BCP in 1932 and
  6. was active in the resistance 1941-44. After
  7. the war, he was elected to the National
  8. Assembly and soon promoted into the BCP
  9. secretariat and Politburo. As BCP first
  10. secretary, Zhivkov became the dominant
  11. political figure in Bulgaria after the death
  12. of Vulko Chervenkov in 1956. Zhivkov was
  13. elected to the new post of state president in
  14. 1971 and lasted until the Eastern bloc
  15. upheavals of 1989.
